Most of the State of Texas has had adequate rainfall to produce the quail, weeds, grasses, and insects for what we hope will be a great quail season. It's too early to know yet how many birds will make it to the hunting season. I have seen a good number of this years birds, and most parts of West Texas are reporting good numbers.
The last couple of years have been tough, with only a few areas having good numbers. With the lack of quail in most of the areas, I did most of my guiding for other outfitters. Hopefully this year there will be enough birds in this area to do hunts here. Not bouncing all over the state.
It's been almost twenty years, since I bought my first bird dog pup. Little did I know just how much he would change my life. Training Jake was one of the easiest things I'd ever done. The next thing I knew, other people were bringing me their dogs to train. It was not until I had trained several dogs that I realized Jake was a natural. Sometimes I wonder if he had not been so easy to train, would I have gotten rid of him and swore never to own another bird dog.
Guiding came about the same way, Cecil "Pee Wee" Cole called me one day, and asked if I would be interested in guiding a quail hunt. As he was giving me all the information, I was wondering how much it was going to cost me. I like to have fell over backwards when he told me what it paid. After several hunts, vet bills, training collars, beeper collars, ruined pickup tires, etc., I found out it wasn't as profitable as I had thought.
On June 3rd. 2002 I went to work for the Warren Ranch as the Wildlife Manager. The Warren Ranch is located in Coleman and Brown counties. One of the most unique ranches ever. Perfect habitat for wildlife, with the Jim Ned River running through it. Offering some of the most scenic country for North Central Texas.

The ranch has never been commercially hunted, and I'm looking forward to help bring it up to one of the finest hunting operations ever. We are currently building a hunting lodge/conference center that will sleep thirty-six people. We will be offering trophy deer, turkey, hogs, dove, duck and varmint hunts, as well as some of the most outstanding quail hunting around.
It's getting close to fall now, my neck is beginning to swell like those big buck deer. Again I can't wait to see the good folks that have hunted with me in the past, as well at meeting new ones. There is nothing like watching a good dog work, and enjoying the great outdoors with some of the most interesting people in the world.
